Dear Black Canyon Parents and Community,

My name is Angela Jangula and I would like to offer a big hello to Black Canyon City. As Superintendent, I look forward to being involved in this wonderful community for another wonderful year. My responsibilities will be part-time Superintendent and part-time teacher. I enjoy being the sports league President and the score keeper for basketball.

As a dedicated educator with a foundation and Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education from Arizona State University and Master's Degree in leadership training from Northern Arizona University, I am committed to nurturing student success from the very beginning. My experience, coupled with the AASA National Superintendent Certification earned in Nov 2020, fuels my mission to foster an environment where every student, teacher, and staff member thrives.

Volunteers are always encouraged and Cañon appreciates any parents or family that wishes to be in the classroom working with students and staff. We would love to have a Parent/Teacher Organization and currently have a Reading with the Kids Program in place where you can come in and read with individual students that can use it. If you would like to join, contact Melissa Norman at mnorman@canonsd50.com.

School starts August 4, 2025 and it is a full day. All district students are welcomed into our school whether it is on a full-time or part-time basis. Melissa Norman is a fully-certified principal and head teacher. Ms. Norman teaches every day, and handles discipline, testing, and curriculum questions until 3:00 PM. She is available at mnorman@canonsd50.com and 623-374-5588 ext 101.

Of course, my door is always open in the District Office, but I am in the classrooms and busy with other duties for about two hours every day. Please come to our school board meetings held in the school library usually on the second Tuesday of every month. You can reach me at 623-374-5588 ext 501 or email me at ajangula@canonsd50.com. Go Cougars!!!

Business Manager Update:

I am happy to announce our new business manager, Leah Polanski. Here is a bit about her:

With a Master of Business Administration, extensive leadership experience in finance, operations, and community-based organizations, and a strong background in education, I bring the skills needed to support the district’s mission while ensuring transparency, compliance, and fiscal accountability.

In my current role as Founder and Director of the North Valley Jags Basketball Club, I oversee all financial operations of a nonprofit youth program, including budgeting, payroll, vendor contracts, and compliance reporting. I have successfully built partnerships with local businesses and organizations to expand resources and opportunities—experience that translates directly to Canon’s commitment to strong community ties.

As President of the Boulder Creek High School Basketball Booster Club, I manage budgets, donor funds, and procurement processes while serving as liaison between coaches, families, and school administrators. My ability to create financial reports, track spending, and align resources with goals has strengthened donor engagement and organizational efficiency. These experiences mirror the responsibilities of overseeing district finances, developing reporting systems, and supporting board transparency. Additionally, my years as a faculty member in higher education have honed my analytical, organizational, and compliance skills. I have served on committees for curriculum, policy, and student success, always ensuring that resources are used effectively to meet institutional goals.

Combined with my MBA training in business operations and data-driven decision making, I am prepared to manage payroll, purchasing, accounting, and budgeting functions for the district. Canon Elementary School’s values of integrity, respect, empathy, inquisitiveness, and accountability resonate deeply with me. I am eager to contribute these values in service to your students, staff, and community while maintaining strong financial and operational systems.

Yours truly,

Angela E. Jangula

Our Superintendent
Dear Canon Elementary School District #50 Parents, Staff and Community Members

Thank you for choosing Canon to educate your children. In Arizona, 85% of the public chooses their local district school to educate their children. Recently in Arizona, there has been a great deal of discussion about school districts’ budgets, specifically what goes into the classroom and what does not go into the classroom. Here are some facts about Canon and definitions that we feel you should know:

Facts About Canon

Arizona School District Spending Report for Fiscal Year 2025 (most recent information):

  • Canon’s Administrative Costs were $3,193 per pupil while our peer average (meaning other districts similar to ours) was $4,857. This is a $1,664 dollar difference.

Legislation may change how letter grades are to be done. We will see how this change affects rural schools in the future. Currently, Canon is a performing school with one of the best growth rates compared to our peers (meaning how much learning is accomplished in a year).

  • Attendance rate is 91%. Attendance is factored into our school grade and that is why we encourage a good attendance rate.

Impact

Canon has worked hard to limit the impact the budget reductions have had on your child’s learning experience. We will be able to give the entire staff a 2% raise. We will now have a school counselor that is grant funded, participate in Yavapai Library System, Principal/Head Teacher time, school nurse that is grant funded and other support services including maintenance, custodial and technology staff. If Black Canyon City grows and our student population increases, we can bring back more for the students. This year we are happy to keep all-day Kindergarten, but it is combined with first grade for a portion of the day. We have P.E., library once a week for the students and Deputy Do Right will be working with all of our grades again-discussing good peer relations and smart choices. You win or lose by the way you chose!- Deputy Do Right.

Public engagement is a keystone of Arizona Politics. Superintendents have met with our state officials and they welcome the input of all citizens. Canon ESD #50 has joined with 17 other Yavapai County School Districts to lobby at the legislature for student voices in education. We need your voice, too. No matter if you agree or disagree, Canon encourages you to contact your elected officials regarding the impact their decisions have on your school and on your child’s education.
